Sydney Toll Roads

Driving in Sydney can be an expensive exercise as the various toll roads are the quickest and easiest way to get from one side of the city to another by car. Some toll roads allow you to pay the toll by cash but others only accept E-Tags.

If you are visiting Sydney you may not have an E-Tag and will need to ring the toll road operator in order to pay the toll using your credit card. All E-Tags from Victoria and Queensland work on Sydney toll roads.

If you do not have an E-Tag you must pay by cash (where available) or pay by credit card by ringing the appropriate number displayed on the tollway within 48 hours of passing through the toll collection point. The toll road operator will charge a fee to accept your payment by credit card.

Note that cash booths are usually un-manned so it helps if you have some small change to pay the toll using the automatic collection booths.

Failure to pay tolls within 48 hours will result in an infringement notice being issued. This will be sent to the hire car company who will pass it on to you. Note that the car rental company will charge an Administration Fee for processing an infringement notice. For example, Thrifty car rental have a $35.00 fee for processing any infringement notices.

So, when driving a Sydney rental car be sure to take note of the many toll road signs and be prepared to pay to drive. To find more information about driving in Sydney visit car hire Sydney.

The Development of Data Projectors

The LCDs utilised in projection systems are usually small reflective or transmissive panels set off by a forceful arc lamp source. A number of lenses magnifies the reflected or transmitted image and displays it onto a screen. With front-projection systems the LCD is located on the same side of the screen as the viewer, while in rear-projection systems the screen is set off from behind. Projectors of greater expense and capability sometimes have three separate LCD panels, forming separate red, green, and blue images that combine to reflect a coloured image on the screen.

The growing requirement for visual displays has had a particular emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. This has led to the manufacture of items build with smectic liquid crystals, some kinds of which possess a quicker electro-optical response than nematic liquid crystals. The surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display is currently the most complex smectic device. With it the liquid crystal molecules are managed in layers perpendicular to the substrate planes, which are differentiated by one or two micrometres, and throughout the layers the molecules are on a tilt, as displayed in the figure. The host liquid crystal possesses optically active molecules, and a minor outcome of the optical activity and the tilt of the molecules is the appearance of a permanent charge separation, or ferroelectric dipole, similar to the ferromagnetic dipole of a magnet. The direction of this dipole is perpendicular to the tilt direction of the molecules and in the plane of the layers. Therefore, there must be a permanent charge separation across the liquid crystal layer in the SSFLC, and its sign is directly paired to the tilt direction of the molecules. An applied voltage of the correct sign can reverse the direction of this dipole in tens of microseconds and so reverse the tilt direction of the molecules. The respective change in optical properties can make a change from light to dark if or when one or more polarizers are used.

SSFLC devices have been publicized for larger passive-matrix presentations, but their cost and complexity has impeded them from having any great effect on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, have shown some probability for use as elements in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their quick response allows them to be used in time-sequential colour systems, in which high cost colour filters are replaced by a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in rapid pulsing (about 100 cycles every second). For example, the liquid crystal might be switched to a transmissive state in the red and green periods then to a nontransmissive state in the blue period, displaying the result that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

Shape and Form in Photographs

Like our eyes, a camera captures reflected light. If the light source is directly behind the camera, reflections bounce back directly off the subject and give an idea of its shape but not so much of its forms, scale and dimensions. But if lit from behind or from the side, the camera captures more light reflected off the subject’s angles. There are more brighter highlights and fewer shadow tones, contrast is higher and the subject’s shape and form become more distinct.

When the light comes from behind the camera, a scene has less contrast, lighter-coloured areas stand out and shadows are filled with light and contain visible detail. But the photograph’s overall impact is often drab and flat. However, when the camera is pointing into the light, edges and shadows become much more distinct.

In a landscape, for example, the sun may shine through leaves, making them stand out, showing the different types of trees and silhouetting trunks and branches. Light also bounces brightly off water and other surfaces. This results in an image with much more of a sense of depth.

Also consider the quality of light. Strong, raking light is often better able to show the form of angular structures, but diffused light can reveal more subtle forms in faces and other softly rounded objects.

As well as the angle and quality of light, the physical composition of a subject’s edges is important for conveying its shape. This is especially important in outdoor portraits. With the sun in the subject’s face, and less contrast, the shape of the head is not clearly defined against a background lit by the same light. But with the sun behind the subject, the light is diffused by the many individual hairs and forms an attractive fringe that brings out the shape we expect to see in a portrait.

Objects with multiple angles are great for exploring shape and form, especially when they are shiny or wet. Very bright specular (mirror-like) highlights can bounce off many angles, and even on a particularly drab day, shapes with such surfaces can stand out.

Best Australian Online Shopping Sites Featured On New Portal

HelpMeSis.com.au is a brand new website that acts as a portal featuring the very best Australian online shopping sites and information websites. The comprehensive and well-researched website has been two years in the making and saves women valuable time and frustration by only showing the best and most relevant websites in each of the many categories.

After 2 years of meticulous research and web development, HelpMeSis.com.au was officially launched in Sydney on 1 January 2010. This comprehensive website acts as a useful portal for busy Australian women, showing them the very best Australian online shopping sites and information websites.

The extensive and informative guide to Australia’s best and most relevant websites was created to help time-poor women find quality products, information and services quickly and easily. Its launch was the culmination of two years of labour by former high school teacher Veronica Ryan.

“Over the past few years, I have visited and revisited many thousands of Australian websites and have hand picked hundreds of the very best to be included in the HelpMeSis website,” said Ms Ryan. “I have chosen these websites for their overall quality, integrity and security and their usefulness and relevance to Australian women,” she said.

The website listings and reviews have been organised into logical categories. Along with a logo, name, link to the site and description of products and services, Ms Ryan has also included practical details such as each company’s ABN and shipping information for shopping websites.

“To have all this information available on one website means women no longer need to visit dozens of individual websites first to find out exactly what they offer and whether they provide online shopping and Australia-wide shipping. They can compare all of this on the HelpMeSis website and only visit the most relevant website, saving them a great deal of time,” said Ms Ryan.

The manual selection process for included websites, together with the navigational simplicity of the portal, its sheer comprehensiveness, detailed information and overall relevance to Australian women, sets HelpMeSis apart from other online directories.

In addition to Australian shopping websites, the HelpMeSis portal also includes a number of themed information sections. A ‘Green Guide’ offers a great deal of information about green products and services and links to quality businesses that sell natural Australian organic products. The ‘Useful Information’ section provides answers to many common queries Australian women have. A complete ‘Parenting’ and baby shopping section gives links to Australian stores specialising in quality parenting & baby products and to sites offering expert information and advice for parents.

Other noteworthy sections on the HelpMeSis website include a ‘Health and Fitness’ section and a ‘Leisure’ section, which offers links to websites providing What’s On information for all Australian capital cities and the Gold Coast. The site further features a blog spot and people can sign up to receive an informative monthly HelpMeSis newsletter.

Men needn’t feel left out either, as Ms Ryan has also launched a ‘brother’ site, aptly named HelpMeBro.com.au where men can shop online at the best Australian online shopping sites. This guys-only site has many of the features of the women’s site but has been styled for men and doesn’t include any of the ‘girly’ content.

The 8 most common causes of lower back pain

The lower back is critical to our function as a human being. It provides structural support as well as enabling movement in all directions. The lower back is primarily responsible for forward and backward movements and also allows sideways bending and rotation. Another critical function of the lower back is to protect the tissues of the nervous system, spinal column as well as the organs of the pelvis and stomach. As such an essential aspect of our lives it is also susceptible to a number of injuries that cause us pain. The top 8 most common causes are outlined below.

8. Bone Injuries
Fractures of the lumbar spine usually occur after a traumatic event such as a fall or motor vehicle accident. If the fracture is unstable, risk of damage to the spinal cord and permanent paralysis is extremely high. Patients are stabilised and immobilised for long periods. If the fracture is stable patients are treated with rest and pain relief. In some cases people with osteoporosis, or those taking medication such as cortisone long term, can be susceptible to fractures even with minimal stress on the spine. This may cause a crush fracture where the vertebrae loses some of its height. Pain can be severe and is often aggravated by movement.

7. Congenital Inherited Conditions
Some of the common inherited conditions that cause lower back pain include scoliosis which is a sideways curve of the spine, sometimes caused when one leg is shorter than the other (functional scoliosis). You can also get structural scoliosis which is a fixed sideways curve often due to unknown factors, more common in women. Another common congenital cause of lower back pain is a forward slip of the lower lumbar vertebrae on top of the sacrum. This is referred to as spondylolisthesis, which in some cases can be associated with fractures of the joining bones in the vertebrae and is known as a pars defect.

6. Bone Encroachment
Sometimes when the bony canal of the spinal cord and the spaces that the nerves exit can be narrowed by bone spurs or other soft tissues. This can cause sciatic pain which radiates down the leg. Often pain from narrowing of the spinal canal gets worse with walking and improves with rest.

5. Arthritis
Arthritic changes and inflammation can affect the lumbar vertebrae as well as sciatic joints and can commonly cause lower back pain and stiffness, which is often worse in the morning. Degeneration can also affect the disc and is known as sponydolosis. This shows up on x-rays as narrowing of the lumbar disc joint space.

4. Lumbar Radiculopathy – Damage to a Disc
When the disc is injured or weakens over time the outer rim can bulge or rupture (herniate), putting pressure on the spinal cord and/or the nerves exiting the bones. This can produce both local low back pain as well as sciatica characterised by pain down the leg. It can also be associated with pins and needles, numbness and weakness. In more serious cases, patients may experience problems with bladder and bowel function. They should seek medical attention immediately.

3. Nerve Irritation
The nerves exiting the bones of the lower back can be irritated by pressure from bone, soft tissue, as well as inflammation. Pain can be both local, as well as radiating down the leg.

2. Tendon and Ligament Strains
The soft tissues supporting and connecting the bones of the lower back can be stretched or injured in a number of ways. Commonly there is some sort of microscopic tear of varying degree which is often caused by an acute injury or overuse.

1. Muscle Strain
The most common form of lower back pain is of muscular origin. Muscle pain can be brought on by poor posture, overuse, improper use, sustained positions and even trauma. It is so common because not only is it the primary cause of most lower back pain, it is a significant component of all the other causes of lower back pain. This is because with arthritic changes, structural changes, such as curvature of the lower back, disc disease or even ruptures will all sensitise the muscles. This is why it is essential to understand muscle pain specifically, to learn strategies for prevention as well as self-management long term.

Selling Skills

“I can’t sell”, I hear you say. Rubbish, everybody can sell. If you ever got a job, sold your car or sold yourself to another person (ie. got married or formed a relationship), you have demonstrated an ability to sell. We sell ideas to others all the time, we just don’t view it as selling.

The role of a sales person is to find out what the customer wants rather than whether the customer wants something at all. Once this is done, a sales person should then help the customer satisfy that need to the customers’ satisfaction. The principle skills a successful salesman needs are:

* Putting your customers in a receptive state of mind, making them feel at ease and unpressured.
* Showing interest in their requests or issues.
* Using opinions as selling points (both yours and theirs).
* Supplying facts and helpful data.
* Meeting objections in a positive way and never becoming defensive or aggressive.
* Agreeing with customers.
* Suggesting additional merchandise or services.(Value adding)
* Building repeat business.

It’s important that you learn to apply these skills, although if you use tact, friendliness, honesty and you know what you’re talking about, you’re 90% there. Not very hard when you consider it.

I know of quite a few small business people that would never consider themselves sales people but have remarkable success at selling their offers by just being themselves. Is this being a good sales person? Probably.

An old friend of mine, Claude owns a book store in one of Brisbane’s trendier suburbs. He spent many years of his life working for the military. It never ceases to amaze me, and his business partner, how this “untrained” person can sell products by just being himself. He is a natural salesman.

On the days he looks after the business instead of his partner, the numbers are always up compared to when he’s not there. If you were to ask him if he thought he was a good salesman he would probably say no, but the sales figures speak for themselves.

He does it by being a friendly, likeable person that loves a joke and a talk with his customers. Most of his clients would never go elsewhere because they like him. I’m sure even if he put his prices up, he would still attract the same clients because they have a relationship with him. They feel good about shopping at his store; he makes sure they do. Everybody can sell, simply use your own personality and be friendly and courteous. Treat customers the way you would like to be treated.

Top sales people make a point of remembering regular customers’ names, ensuring each time they come to the store they receive a small discount or offering other little extras like helping them to the car with their parcels. As I mentioned before with my friend, he fosters friendships with his regular customers. This fosters loyalty to the business by the customer, quite often regardless of price, because they get preferential treatment. You’ve probably had the feeling yourself when you constantly use a particular business and each time you walk in the people don’t just ask for the order.

Generally, sales people feel awkward about asking the customer for the order. These sales people will never be really successful in sales. A lot of sales are lost simply because the sales person doesn’t put the onus back on the customer to make a decision, they simply leave the decision up in the air which allows the potential customer to quietly drift out the door without having to commit themselves to a buying decision. How many times do you do this? I do it all the time and think to myself, “I’m glad nobody put me under pressure, I probably would have spent money”.

Quality Office Furniture for Your Business

Like with any larger business, workers are the ones who create the results, and happy workers will produce the best results. Choosing quality office furniture for your business will not only keep your staff happy, but will make a good impression on your customers as well. Regardless of what some might say, quality furniture can have a larger impact on your business than you would think.

When you are looking to buy new furniture for your office, keep in mind that you are not the only one who will benefit from the newly bought equipment. In case you have rooms full of staff, you have to be aware that you are going to be using the office furniture much less then they will, so having their best interests in mind should be your top priority. Also think about the customers who visit your offices and how do you want them to feel upon their entering.

To buy the best possible furniture at an affordable price you must do your research and also know where to find it. A lot of people are of the opinion that shopping online is now easier and more convenient than buying on the high street. There are numerous options available online, but finding the one that suits you the most shouldn’t be a problem. To get the best deal possible, you need to compare different office furniture and different stores as well.

Office furniture includes various types of things like chairs, sofas, storage cases and desks. The best scenario is to equip your office with compatible furniture in one fell swoop, which means that you have to plan ahead. Make a list of all the furnishings your office needs and put them in order of importance so that your budget will cover the essentials.

By following this method, you make sure that you get the necessities first at an affordable price, allowing your budget to free up some space for additional optional items. Luxury office furniture such as sofas, water coolers or a few artworks as well, makes an excellent addition to your otherwise ordinary office, giving it a bit of vibrance and enjoyment.

When constructing a plan, you have to consider several things. One of the most important considerations is how much space you have to work with and whether your budget will allow you to afford all that equipment. You also need to think about your employees and customers and what kind of impression your furniture will have on them. Will they be able to use all that office furniture comfortably and conveniently? Questions like these should be answered before you purchase any item to avoid mistakes you might later regret.

One of the best philosophies to follow is to take your time when planning so you get everything the way you want it. You should also make a sketch of all the possible placements and find the one that is most suitable and convenient given your situation.
